Disk data recovery is the process of recovering data from a hard drive that has either been corrupted, damaged or completely inaccessible for other technical reasons. Because of the delicate nature of hard drives and the technical data held within them, this can sometimes be a difficult process. In the best case scenario, you can purchase a data recovery program; in the worst case scenario, you’ll need to seek out professional data recovery services.

In the event of dealing with a hard drive that has become completely inaccessible, you’ll most likely have to hire a professional to look at it. This may mean mailing your hard drive, or whole computer, to the service location, or dropping it off at a nearby service center in person. Disk data recovery can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. But, in most cases, a professional will be able to diagnose your case rather quickly and let you know whether disk data recovery is a possibility or if your data is gone forever. It’s a difficult situation, but something we all need to be prepared for when our hard drive’s fail.

In addition to your hard drive being physically damaged, there are a number of other ways that can cause you to lose data. You could have overwritten your data, or you could simply be dealing with a logic failure, most likely attributed to corrupt software or hardware. It’s also not uncommon for a nasty computer virus to be the cause of your disk failure.

Types of Disk Data Recovery

As I touched on briefly above, there are several different types of disk data recovery. If your hard drive is accessible, you are much more fortunate. In this case, you should be able to download a data recovery program or software that will recover the lost data for you. This option requires very little technical data, other than installing the software and following the instructions.

If your disk is severely corrupt or physically damaged, you’ll need to seek out professional data recovery services. The cost of these services can be as little as $50 (for the most minor case) and can go up into the tens of thousands of dollars (for the most extreme cases). But remember, any time you hire a professional for any type of service, it’s always going to cost more than a piece of software. So back up your data often and keep your most important files on external drives – such as a USB memory card or even a large external hard drive, depending on how much memory you need.
